The Truth About Feedback

Have you been in a situation where you had to give feedback to someone?

How easy or hard was it to find words of appreciation with candor?

Being judgemental about someone else’s behaviour is a common human trait.

All of us have a lens of our world model through which we view and perceive others.

A common misconception about feedback is that it should always be accepted and implemented. We seek feedback to understand how we are doing and what we can do differently to succeed within our social and professional network. We always choose to ignore the criticism of someone when it does not align with our values and beliefs.

We must remember that people’s opinions do not change who we are. Sometimes flattery can be confused with feedback, and we have to be conscious about how we manage people who do not think long-term or win-win for everyone.

If feedback brings strong emotions, we must gather facts and ask questions to understand the reason behind the emotions. Being emotional isn’t a bad thing, but if it does not seem ecological, it’s our moral responsibility to focus on things that help everyone.

Feedback is always available regardless of if we ask or not.

Feedback is evident in our behaviours and actions and those around us.

What if, only for today, you take five minutes from your busy schedule and remember feedback you have received recently.

What if, only today, you would ask someone you trust for their feedback on how you are doing?

What if the insights you get from feedback could change how you see, hear, and feel about your performance?

Where should you start:

  • Practice daily gratitude and be thankful for the people in your lives.
  • Practice daily meditation and remain in charge of your emotions.
  • Practice thinking your thoughts and focusing on what you want.
  • Practice asking and giving feedback that helps create win-win situations for everyone around you.
